Tips for Extending the Lifespan of Sewage Pump Systems
A sewage pump system that you keep properly maintained can last for up to a decade or even more if you take excellent care of it! Get the most out of your sewage pump system and reduce the number of messy repairs you’ll need by using these tips to extend its lifespan.
Pump It Out On Schedule
Many septic tank professionals recommend pumping out your system every three years or so. If you have a large household with greater water needs, have it pumped once a year. Regular pumping will help you catch and repair minor problems early.
Install a Check Valve
A check valve in a submersible wastewater pump keeps water flowing in one direction and prevents backflow. Backflow is a polite word for dirty wastewater that flows back in the direction it came from, potentially filling your toilet or sink with sewage.
The check valve also prevents short cycling. This is when the pump constantly turns on and off. Short cycling can reduce the pump’s lifespan, so make sure your check valve is in good working condition.
Be Wary of Chemical Cleaners
When you clean out your toilets, tubs, and sinks, be careful about the chemical cleaners you use. Your sewage pump system is full of bacteria that help to break down solid waste. However, excessive chemical cleaning can kill those bacteria and interfere with the waste levels. This can eventually clog your sewage pump.
Watch What You Flush
The only items you should flush down your toilet are human waste and toilet paper. Baby wipes (even if they have a “flushable” label) and menstrual products are leading causes of sewage pump clogs! Avoid nasty backups and tank overflows by keeping non-flushable waste out of your toilet.
If you want to extend the lifespan of your sewage pump system and minimize the need for plumbing assistance, use these tips. They’ll help you keep your pump in good condition. With regular maintenance and proper use, your sewage pump could last well over a decade!
