Sewage Grinder Pumps for Pressure Sewers and Below-Grade Drains

A grinder pump does what a plain sewage pump can't. Cutter blades ahead of the impeller shred solids - toilet paper, wipes, the fibrous stuff people flush that they shouldn't - into a slurry, then push it under high pressure through a small-diameter line. That's the pump you need when the fixture sits below the sewer main, when the run is long, or when the whole street is on a pressurized sewer system.

The trade-off is pressure over volume. Grinder pumps move less at a time, roughly 35 to 70 GPM, but they'll send it thousands of feet and up serious head. Residential units start around 1 to 2 HP with a 1-1/4 inch discharge, built from cast iron and stainless to survive raw wastewater. Sizing is the real call. Match horsepower to your total head and run length; most grinders want at least 30 feet of head to keep the motor from over-speeding.
